Leaves as a component of a biomaterial and its application in the packaging industry.

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to present leaf-based biomaterial and its application in the packaging industry. The work consists of four chapters: the theoretical part, market analysis, the initial stage for the project and the design process. They are complemented by introduction and bibliography. The theoretical part presents the definition of packaging, its functions and types. The history of packaging is also described here. A market analysis was carried out, which included the existing plant-based biomaterials and ecological cosmetic packaging. The next part of the work was to define leaves as floristic waste. The components that make up the biomaterial were also described. The fourth chapter is a documentation of design trials, the process of producing biomaterial from leaves and its use in a series of packaging for ecological face creams. The final packaging project was also presented in the last chapter of this thesis.

Ecological material as a replacement for plastics.

The purpose of this work was to present ecological material and its sample application. The work consists of three chapters: the theoretical part, the initial stage for the project and the design process. They are complemented by introduction and bibliography. The theoretical part shows the history of plastics and biomaterials. Subsequently, a market analysis was carried out in which the negative environmental impact of plastics was included, an analysis of existing organic materials and pots available on the market. There was also a survey of people with gardens. The theme was production pots. The third chapter is documentation of the design process of banana leather material, its use in production pots and packaging for flower bulbs. The final draft of the work was also presented in this chapter.

FASHION DESIGN Re – iceland. Design of a unique clothing collection inspired by Icelandic culture in relation to ecological fashion phenomena.

The clothing collection was designed with a closed loop approach. More than 50% of the materials have been sourced from used or expendable clothes, as well as garment company waste. The remaining materials are made of natural fibres. The collection is the quintessence of positive phenomena in the fashion industry, aiming at agitating ecological values and reducing the negative impact of the fashion sector on the environment. The clothing line is based on the idea of up-cycling. This collection is dedicated to modern women who are not afraid of challenges, ready to face the upcoming ecological REVOLUTION.

Bicycle-friendly racks. Design of a bicycle rack with particular emphasis on vehicle safety.

A design of bicycle mounting rack with the use of soft elements made of pulverized car tires, which are intended to prevent damages and scratches on various parts of the bike. Its simple design and the use of wire covered with a soft layer allow free shaping of the central part, so we can adjust it to various bicycles sizes - while maintaining stability of the structure. In addition, this solution gives us many aesthetic options, even in its basic colour version (using the natural colour of the rubber and stainless steel handrails), which create a diverse but minimalist collection, perfectly suited to modern urban spaces, as well as gently contrasting, for example, in historic areas of the cities.

Product concepts using ground automotive tires. Project carried out with the Department of Manufacturing Technology

An acoustic panel which is functioning as a natural shelter for small animals. Busy streets near city parks cause a lot of noise. Palla panel minimizes the negative noises of the city thanks to its shape, modular design, different sizes of elements and the material used. Its soundproofing wall is made of recycled materials, mainly from used tires, which are ideal as sound insulation. The nooks in the balls can also serve as a shelter for small animals inhabiting city parks.

A chair for the care of the elderly with motor disability, facilitating daily hygiene activities. The stable structure ensures not only a safe and comfortable position for the patient, but also for the caregiver. One of the key elements are anti-skid inserts made of materials made of ground car tires.

Broken door? Scratched bumper? These are frequent experiences of drivers using underground car parks. Covers made of 100% ground car tires will protect the car and the construction elements from too close contact

Greenline is a modular system of pavement lines, made of waste ground car tires. The lines support the moves and orientation in the open field for people with disabilities, such as visual or motor impairment. With just a minor interference, the paths created by people in the nature become available also for the blinds. The modular plates made of granulated car tire ensure quick installation of paths which are comfortable and safe for persons on wheelchair or families with children.

The concept of reusing glass bottles.

The system allows the user to repeatedly fill the bottle with fresh juice from dispensers, which are placed in stores. Each time the container is cleaned under pressure to guarantee sterility before refilling. A printer in the device prints a label with the new data regarding the date of consumption, caloric values or vitamins. The label itself also provides information leading to a page where we can find all the data related to the location of filling points or the operation of the system.

Hair Bands

Rough packaging for tough guys – This series of packaging for hair bands is kept in a raw and manly style perfect for the respective target group. The whole series consists of 6 unique images of a tough guy with different clothes and hairstyles, including one from the special edition of SAMURAI. The hair bands are stretched over the package and presented as part of the wardrobe of differently dressed characters, and can be easily put on or taken off. On the back of the package there is a simple instruction for tying the hair. The black and white graphic design adds simplicity – the filling was supplemented with black ink.

The series of hair elastic packages can be perceived with the help of 3 senses. Sight - simple but very concise and interesting graphics of heartwood, touch - the packaging has been laser engraved so that the areas filled with ink have recesses and smell - each of the packages exudes a delicate smell of burnt wood. The package is 100% recycled. The project was carried out under the supervision of MoA Anita Szymankiewicz. The Hair bands project has been appreciated many times and achieved numerous successes. The series of packaging was included in the TOP 25 packages in the ProCarton Young Designers Award competition in 2020 (competition with a European scope), it was also awarded by the Polish Chamber of Packaging in the competition 10. Student's Zone organized by Packaging Innovations in 2021 at international fairs (competition for nationwide), and participated in the exhibition of the best student projects Agrafa'22 in Katowice (international competition).

Packaging concept for Ikea finger puppets. The main goal was to give packaging a second life. Trying to make it attractive for children and easy to use. It protects product on the shelf and during transportation and gives children space for their creativity. Packaging transforms into a puppet theatre that can be freely decorated by the child using crayons or markers.

Packaging for trash bags, which has an additional educational function.Simple pictograms are to facilitate and accelerate the proper segregation of rubbish. Two construction variants were designed - single and collective packaging. The multipack can be displayed in various ways, laid flat on store shelves, hanging on a hook or folded into cubes (it is secured by perforation before opening). The design includes the packaging of bags for bio waste, plastics and metal, paper and glass. Ecological recycled paper was used for the production.

The idea of the packaging design for batteries was born from the need. We wanted to give the user possibility to segregate batteries into flat and full ones. Because of the clear graphic with "good" or "bad" signature, user can select the right battery and to not get frustrated taking an empty one instead of a full one. The packaging is made of eco paper (craft type) with no usage of any foil or glue. Graphic design is using only a one color which is to make the design more simple and readable. The construction of the packaging and the high paper grammage provide the stability and covering for the batteries. They stay stable even if the packaging falls down.
